Funkwerk receives new order for Berlin S-Bahn

back to overview

Funkwerk AG has won a new order for its innovative GSM-R train radio systems.

Kölleda, 16 September 2016 - Funkwerk AG has won a new order for its innovative GSM-R train radio systems: Deutsche Bahn AG has ordered 720 systems equipped with particularly interference-resistant radio modules for the trains of the Berlin S-Bahn. The order, which has a value in the low single-digit million euro range, includes the retrofitting of all three S-Bahn series used in Berlin. Funkwerk will begin delivery in 2017, with the retrofit scheduled for completion at the end of 2018.

The GSM-R Cab radio ordered is based on the tried-and-tested MESA train radio system, which is equipped with the new, innovative radio module with excellent reception characteristics. A special filter shields the communication in the train from all radio interference, including from public networks, and thus significantly improves it. Funkwerk has been supplying these advanced systems - almost 1,400 units in total - to the Dutch railway company since April 2016 and has now won its first significant order in Germany. „With this order,“ says Kerstin Schreiber, CEO of Funkwerk AG, „we are once again underpinning our position as a technological pioneer in the field of GSM-R train radio systems. Due to new legal regulations, which stipulate improved reception characteristics for train radio, we expect further international railway operators to upgrade their systems in the coming years.“
