Funkwerk receives order to retrofit over 500 Spanish rail vehicles with GSM-R train radio systems

Kölleda, 18.12.2023 - Funkwerk AG, one of the leading technology providers of innovative communication, information and safety systems as well as technical services, has been awarded several major tenders in Spain: The largest rail vehicle operator in the country, Renfe Viajeros, has commissioned Funkwerk Systems GmbH to equip over 500 passenger trains and locomotives with GSM-R train radio systems. They will be used on the Spanish rail network, which covers almost 12,000 kilometres and is gradually being equipped with digital train radio. Until now, vehicle drivers in the country have largely used analogue communication. Funkwerk's deliveries to Renfe will begin in 2024 and should be completed by mid-2026. Regional project management and installation of the systems will be carried out by a Spanish partner.

In addition to retrofitting the existing vehicle fleet in Spain, Funkwerk is also supplying train radio systems for around 400 new vehicles to several vehicle manufacturers. These so-called dual-mode systems can be operated in both GSM-R digital radio and analogue mode. „With these orders,“ says Kerstin Schreiber, Spokeswoman of the Executive Board of Funkwerk AG, „Funkwerk AG is achieving its strategic goal of opening up the Spanish railway market and establishing itself as a leading supplier of train radio systems in Spain.“
